Scott

George Scott from Yorkshire emigrated to America in 1788 and settled in Otsego Town, Otsego, New York. A son Samuel was born in 1809.

Shuttleworth

William SHUTTLEWORTH (1825-1877)of Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, carpet and rug weaver was persuaded, in 1876, to move to the United States by Alexander T. Stewart under a three year agreement to make rugs and carpets. Stewart would supply the machinery and work area. William and his well trained brothers began the manufacture of rugs and carpet in line with their contract with Stewart, at Glenham, on the Hudson. William suddenly sickened and died in 1877 at the age of 52. William's 4 brothers carried out the agreement that had been made with Stewart, who had also died that year. William had married Rachel Wilson in Yorkshire, she died in New York City in 1885 aged 62 years.

Their son, John (1844-1909) born in Yorkshire was an excellent weaver and dyer. With his Yorkshire wife, Annie Rastrick they had 8 children.

William's son James, born in Yorkshire, after completing the contract with Stewart, started a business with his brothers called Shuttleworth Bros. & Co. They were described as experienced, capable businessmen, having been taught every detail both of making the goods and of managing the business." Two other brothers were involved in the business, Walter W. and Herbert I. both born in Yorkshire. The business was still functioning in 1911.

Whitehead

Ralph Radcliffe WHITEHEAD (1854-1929) born in Saddleworth, son of an industrialist. Studied at Oxford and graduated with a Master of Arts degree. He had become interested in the Arts and Crafts movement. He emigrated to the US and married Jane Byrd McCall of Philadelphia in 1892; together, they used his inheritance to found the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony at Woodstock, NY in 1903. The original colony did not last long but Woodstaock is still a haven for artists of all kinds. They had 2 children,

Winspear

The Winspear family were in Glaisdale from at least 1674. Pennock WINSPEAR was born in 1822 at Whitby, Yorkshire settled in Cheektowaga, Erie Co., New York in 1832 with his parents, James and Mary (Nee Bennison) who had married in Whitby 25 July, 1812. Pennock became a supervisor and commissioner in Cheektowaga. James died 1849 and Mary died in 1862. These parents were to have 9 children.
