Adams
Nancy ADAMS (1908-1998) was born in Yorkshire. She was dedicated to the rights of women, especially the
women in rural communities. She lived and worked in Saskatchewan. In 1975 she was made a Member of
the Order of Canada and she was the first woman appointed to the Board of Governors at the University of
Saskatchewan. She died in 1998.
Snell
Lt. Col.
Herbert SNELL (1880-1932) was born in Hunshelf, Stocksbridge, Yorkshire, son of David (Coachman born Sutterby Lincoln) and Ellen (born Sheffield) Snell. His family emigrated to Ontario and when a
young man Herbert, in 1905, had moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where he opened his own retail store. He
closed it down in 1917 to serve in the Canadian Army in WW1 in France. After the war, in 1919, he returned to
Moose Jaw. By 1922 he had joined the
Robert Simpson Department Store of Montreal, he later became vice-
president and general manager. He died in 1932 from his war wounds.
Yardley/Yeardley
Henry YARDLEY/YEARDLEY b.1856 Ecclesfield, Yorkshire m.1878 Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield to Fanny Kirk ROBSON (b.1859
Ecclesall). In 1881 he was Coal Agent & Farmer of 16 Acres, living with wife and children at Oaks Fold, Ecclesfield
with children: Mary R. b.1879 and Marion F. b.1880.
They emigrated to Canada in 1881 and settled in the new town of Estevan, where he farmed,
mined coal and ran a lumber yard. He became the first Mayor of Estevan in 1906. Henry and Fanny were
trained singers and would entertain in concerts and Fanny sang in church. The family eventually moved to Vancouver,
British Columbia, where Henry died in 1936 and Fanny died in 1950. This family may be connected with the
Yeardley family of Whiston and Rotherham.
