Copley

William COPLEY (1845-1925) farmer and politician born in High Green near Sheffield, eldest son of James Copley, miner and his wife, Elizabeth nee Redfearn. The family emigrated to Australia in 1849 and lived at Burra Burra. They visited the Victorian goldfields in 1851, but returned to settle in West Torrens. From 1867 to 1910, William was a wheat farmer. In 1884 he was elected to the House of Assembly. He was a 'strong farmer's advocate'. He sat on the 1891 and 1898-99 pastoral land commissions. He was minister of agriculture and education from 1892 to 1893. Survived by his wife and four daughters, William died in 1925, leaving an estate sworn for probate at 5308 pounds. The town of Copley commemorates him.

Faulding

Francis Hardy FAULDING (1816-1868) born in Swinefleet near Goole, son of a surgeon. At age 25 sailed on the 'Naob' to Australia as a ship's surgeon and settled in Adelaide, South Australia where he opened a pharmacy. In 3 years he also operated a warehouse and became Australia's first wholesaler - F H Faulding & Co. The company is now a multinational pharmaceutical manufacturer, as well as being a national wholesale operation.

Freeman

The FREEMAN family was what the Australians called 'Ten Pound Poms' because the adults travelled to Australia for only 10 pounds and their children travelled free. Gordon, Ruby and their 2 sons, Colin born in 1937 and Brian born in 1943 left Harrogate, Yks for Adelaide, South Australia in 1951. After a short stay in the Bathhurst Migrant Hostel and Finsbury Hostel they eventually settled in Adelaide. Both boys attended Adelaide University and went on to Post Graduate studies. Colin spent 6 years in Papua New Guinea as Librarian of the New Guinea collection in the newly formed University Papua New Guinea and has written 3 books on New Guinea topics. He subsequently had a 3 year Diplomatic posting in the Embassy of Australia in Washington, DC. In recent years, Colin has been Senior Lecturer in the University of New South Wales and the Australian National University. He has also been a Consultant with a United Nations Agency in Thailand and Nepal.
